Trails of Lake Garda

Today we're talking about the Ponale Trail, one of the most iconic, appreciated, and frequented trails in Europe. What makes it so special is its location. The trail is nestled between the rocky cliffside, the tunnels that make up the road carved into the mountain, and the steep drop overlooking Lake Garda, offering a splendid view of the lake's various colors and the shore of Malcesine.

A Bit of History:

The trail was created in the mid-19th century to connect Riva del Garda to Valle di Ledro. During World War I, several tunnels and military shelters were built, with the most significant being the Tagliata del Ponale, an Austrian fortification built on various levels inside the mountain. It can be visited by participating in guided tours organized by APT Garda Trentino. The Ponale Trail was abandoned in the 1990s with the construction of the new tunnel, until 2004 when it was transformed into a cycling and pedestrian path.

Getting There:

The path to the trail starts from the port of Riva del Garda, following the lakeside road towards Limone. Once you reach the hydroelectric plant and just before the tunnel, you take the deviation onto the Gardesana road that climbs up the mountain. The trail starts from this point and is marked as D01.

Duration:

The trail consists of several variations based on one's destination. If you want to reach Pregasina, the route is about 6 km long with an elevation gain of about 350 meters and a duration of just under 2 hours on foot. On the other hand, if you reach the Valle di Ledro, the trail is approximately 10 km long with an elevation gain of 550 meters, taking about 3 hours to complete on foot. The Ponale Trail is suitable for everyone, including both experienced hikers and families.
